The Chris Thater Memorial will reach an historic milestone this weekend in Binghamton, New York. Not only will the event be commemorating its 25th anniversary, but many of the strongest pro cyclists and teams will be there to help support the Broome County STOP DWI program and to compete for a total purse of $70,000.
The event is part of the National Racing Calendar and the USA CRITS series.
In the crit series, Yosvany Falcon (TOSHIBA-Santo presented by Herbalife) currently tops the leaderboard followed by Adam Myerson (Time Pro Cycling), Frank Travieso (TOSHIBA-Santo), Seth Hansley (Locos Pub & Grill); and Mark Hekman (TOSHIBA-Santo). 37 points separate Falcon from Myerson, 16 points separate Travieso from Hansley, and Hekman is looming large for Hansley because only 2 points separate them. So the stage is set for some race-day fireworks.
Previous winners like Kyle Wamsley (Colavita/Sutter Home); Hilton Clarke (Toyota-United); Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home), and Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine) will be eager to repeat.
Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine), who took second place in last year’s race, is holding onto first place in the series. Only 16 points behind her is Jennifer Wilson (Vanderkitten). Taitt Sato (ValueAct Capital) is in third place but likely will find it impossible to make up all the ground between herself and the leaders. Leigh Valletti (Vanderkitten) is in fourth place, followed by Pic.
Chris Thater was an avid cyclist who was killed by a drunken driver.
